CLUB NIGHT 17th JUNE 2025
DEMONSTRATION BY MALCOLM BRYANT
The evening started out in the usual way welcoming new members and guests giving out a few notices before introducing Malcolm.
Malcolm thanked the audience for the warm welcome and asked if you wanted to know what he was going to be making this evening, yes please was the reply. The item was a Caddy spoon this handed to the floor for passing around so members could get a close up of what the item would look like.
Malcolm explained that the first thing to do was to take two pieces of wood half the thickness of the width and glue them together with a paper joint.
Placing the block between centres adding a spigot to one end Malcolm was able to mount the piece in the chuck.
After placing, the block into the chuck turned it to a cylinder ready for profiling. Photo 1 shows the piece turned to the round and marked out for the bowl photo 2 shows Malcolm highlighting the dimension with a Parting tool.
Next part of the project was to start turning the bowl of the spoon also start shaping the handle. Photos 3& 4
As you can see in photo 4 the item is being sanding following on from the sanding Malcolm used a food safe sealer before parting off from the waste material.
The next part was to split the two spoons apart and using a special prepared jig showed the members how to hollow out the bowl. Photo 5 sealed piece being parted off whilst photo 6 shows a spoon fitted in to the jig.
You will notice in photo 6 the spoon handle protruding out of the jig on the right hand side once you start to turn please be very cautious of this flying around. Once the bowl was finished, releasing it from the jig the finished Caddy Spoon then given to the audience to pass around.
Malcolm’s next project would be a whistle, which he introduced to the members by blowing one.
Setting up a square section piece of wood approx. 65mm long it was turned to the round before he drilled a 10 mm hole to about two thirds of the length.
Photo 7 shows Malcolm marking a line 20mm in from the end this was for a saw cut at 90-degree angle to the piece to half of the diameter. In photo 8, you will see the saw cut plus the 45-degree angle to make the blow hole also a pencil line defining the depth of the drilled hole. This is for guidance when parting off.
This was parted off sanded and finished off with either sander sealer or food save.
The last part to making the whistle whistle was to make a Fipple. So taking a 12mm square section piece of timber turning it down to 10mm diameter the top was flattened of to leave a depth of 8.5mm (in other words flatten it by 1.5mm). Fitting the Fipple the hole to the edge of the 90-degree saw cut. Removing the waste material from the mouthpiece. The dimensions mentioned here have come from Malcolm via WhatsApp after the meeting to help in making them whistle.
At the end of this write up will be three photos one of a single spoon, the second one showing two spoons made and two spoons in their split state whilst the third is of two whistles.
The demo ended with a long round of applause before Richard ended the evening reminding everyone about the chairman’s challenge also Jason Breaches challenge in August.
The last thing was a slight disappointment on the competition table and he hoped to see more entries in the future.
