If a member has any questions or requires clarification about competition pieces please approach the judges for advice as they will be only to pleased to help.

Beginners/Novice Turners

2023

SEPTEMBER

TURNED OBJECT OF YOUR CHOICE
Turn anything that pleases you

OCTOBER

JIG 
For gripping work piece to turn off chuck point and the piece you require the jig for (i.e. a bowl)

NOVEMBER

TOY
Must be child safe

DECEMBER

XMAS DECORATION
Table decoration or tree hanging

2024

JANUARY

BANGLE / BRACELET
Turned ring. Fabricate jamb chuck to finish bangle. Must be big enough to slip onto a wrist

FEBRUARY

HOLLOW FORM 
Any design,suggest you keep it small.

MARCH

COCKTAIL STICK HOLDER
Any design must be able to hold cocktail sticks.

APRIL

APPLE & PEAR
Suggest you cut  a real apple and pear in half to see and accept true shape .  Use a screw chuck to hold wood block, install stalk into the hole.

MAY

GOBLET
Try to make at least six inches high, balance cup against stem height.

JUNE

DECORATIVE BOWL
Can be coloured, mixed woods glued together. Wide rim could be decorated.

JULY

TEA CUP AND SAUCER
Take your design from a classic tea set. Handle will have to be carved and glued on.  

AUGUST

TEA LIGHT HOLDER
Design with safety in mind –Turn candle hole to diameter of tea light allowing 2mm extra for old candle to be removed.

SEPTEMBER

Intermediate Turners Bi-Monthly Competition

Designed to challenge those of us who have mastered the basics but now need to seek new challenges in woodturning.  Anyone can enter but those in the “Intermediate” category will be assessed  for each piece to perhaps win the Trophy at the AGM.

2023

NOVEMBER

SOMETHING THREADED
This can be anything; a box, a needle case, a nut cracker.  If you need  thread chasing tools the Club has a set you can borrow.

2024

JANUARY

CELTIC KNOT
Any item that incorporates the Celtic Knot technique, be it a pen, a vase, a bowl or whatever takes your fancy.

MARCH

SOMETHING BURNED
Charring, or raising the grain in wood is a technique long used to create rustic pieces with exagerated grain texture. What can you produce?

MAY

OFF-CENTRE TURNING
You have seen those things that look like a cross between a crankshaft and a beautiful woman. Well here is your chance to create something special, a goblet or a Christmas decoration perhaps!

JULY

SOMETHING THIN HOLLOWED
How thin dare you go? Can you maintain a constant thickness to the bottom? Here is your chance to find out. Delicacy and form are paramount.

ANY THING YOU CHOOSE
Let your imagination roam free, or stick to what you know best.  The choice is yours!

Developing and Challenging Turning Skills

We run competitions for member’s to stretch skills and imagination.

Submissions are judged and constructively critiqued by senior club members who award marks to each entry.

The competition year runs from September to August. Scores are accumulated to establish a winner and runner up in each category

Competition pieces are entered and judged at the monthly Tuesday Evening Club Meetings. 

Help and advice including a demonstration of the following months competition piece will be given at Saturday morning meetings.

The September competition is one of personal choice to help determine the category an individual should be competing  in the following year.
