SATURDAY CLUB 14TH DECEMBER 2024

Today started as any other Saturday with Alan and myself turning on the two small lathes and with John unable to make it that meant the large lathe was available for anyone else to practice on.
The morning passed very quickly and it was not long before we were packing up and heading for home.
This will be my last write up about the Saturday club unless anything extraordinary happens.

CLUB NIGHT 17th DECEMBER 2024

DEMONSTRATION BY MIKE HASELDEN

The evening started with a couple of notices before Richard introduced Mike.
After a round of applause, Mike stated that it was nice to be back at the club demonstrating.
Mike asked the members what they would like to see a lidded box or a winged bowl and the lidded bowl won.
Picking up a small branch of Laburnum marking off the centres attached the piece to the lathe proceeded to turn it to the round. Once down to the round, each end had a Dovetail spigot turned. Photos 1 & 2.

Removing it from between centres, placing one end into the chuck Mike was able by using a parting tool to remove a small piece from the piece. He was then able to remove another piece approximately one third of the length that remained. Photos 3 & 4.

In photo 5 you will notice a hole had been drilled this was done to a depth to help Mike define were the base of the box would be. Once Mike was happy with the depth and diameter of the recess. He changed the main body for the insert piece.
This then had to be turned down to make it fit the recess in the main body Photos 7 & 8.

Once Mike was satisfied, the two pieces were glued together it was then reversed on the lathe so that he could now remove the internal material of the bowl. Point to note at this time is that the piece glued in the body made up the internal lid flange and the outside is only touched to remove any glue residue.
With the inside of box complete it was now time to turn his attention to fitting the lid so placing the last piece on the lathe to that he could commence the operation.
Firstly, truing up the end and then using a Vernier the internal diameter was marked Photo 9 whilst in Photo 10 it shows the beginning of the marrying up of the lid to the body.
I will just mention at this time that Mike felt that doing it this way you lost less material between body and lid giving you a much better line up on the graining.

Photo 11 shows the two parts fitting together whilst photo 12 shows the piece reversed in the chuck and the outside of the box being turned.

Unfortunately, I did not get a photo of the finished article but photo 13 shows how the item would have looked.

As Mike had some time he told the audience that, he would show how he makes a sphere.
Taking a piece of square section wood, which would then turned to the round.
It is difficult to describe how Mike tuned the sphere show hope the next two or three photos will help.
The first two show the jig whilst the third one show the jam chuck that he used for finalizing the sphere where the spigots had been.

Lastly, the last two photos show the only entry into the Beginners competition and the Display table.

I hope that this helps and makes sense and encourages you to have a go this is the last write up for 2024 with a reminder that Saturday Club is 11th January 2025 and club night is 21st January 2025.
So have a happy new year and let us hope that it is a healthy one.
