CLUB NIGHT 18th FEBRUARY 2025
DEMONSTRATION BY RICHARD AYERS
Richard started the meeting in the usual way with notice welcoming guests and new members.
I took the floor to announce the passing of John Hilton one of our original members until he was not able to drive anymore in 2015 John was a prolific turner and a great asset to the club.
Richard then introduced himself as tonight’s speaker and that we had an apprentice this evening on the computer so please bear with her.
The demonstration started by using a number of slides entitled “TRICKS OF THE TRADE” these slides were very informative especially for complete beginners. Unfortunately, I am unable to download the photos sent to me by Richard and therefore unable to show them.
Taking a piece of square section, he proceeded to explain how to mark centres on each end using various methods. Centre popped the ends and placed it between centres on the lathe using Steb centres on doth ends. Photo 1. You will notice that Richard has placed the Steb centre into the chuck.

After Richard had turned the block down to round he showed a template, which he would use to help to size his spigot, see photo 3.
Using this template, he guaranteed that would have the correct size every time.

Photo 4 shows an aid to help describe the angle of the tool as he demonstrates the different angles that the tool goes to whilst hollowing out, photo 5 shows the same aid using the Spindle gouge on the outside of the object
This is a far as I can go as I left at half time and we were unable to get recorded photos from the computer that night.
Richard continued with his demonstration, which I understand was a great success.

Photos 6 to 11 show the clubs competition table, gallery, Smokers and a couple of platters by Stewart Furini.
I have done my best on the last two club nights so I hope that it gives you some insight as too what took place.
